explosionという単語がその影響を含んではいないので、しっかりthe effects ofを付けます。
They are suffering from the effects of poison.も毒そのものは正しく管理されていれば何も起きないですから、ちゃんとthe effects ofが付いてます。
（個人的にThey are suffering from the poison.と言いがちなので、今回の投稿になりました。）
